Hi all,

i am thinking of getting the Yaesu FT-950 but i have had my doubts
with the radio reading the reviews. they say its built around the
FTDX-9000. but what is it compared to the FT-2000. my budget is for
the FT-950 and i dont know if it is worth spending the money for it.
can some of the problems be fixed with software updates with the
DMU-2000?

Thanks in advance

I CAN'T DO MUCH OF ANYTHING WITH JUST ONE HAND BUT MOTOROLLA HAS A BUNCH OF
HIRED HANDS THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO WRITE SOFTWARE THE DMU IS LESS THAN A 286
COMPUTER AND IS REAL SLOW WHEN YOU CHANGE TO THE MAP FROM THE SCOPE SCREEN
THEY DIDN'T EVEN SET IT UP TO USE THE FUNCTION KEYS ON YOUR KEYBOARDYOU HAVE
TO USE THE RADIO KEY PAD A REAL DRAG

Daniel, if you're going by the reviews on eHam.net remember one thing; most of those alleged "bad" reviews were probably written by guys who you couldn't keep happy if you hung 'em with a new rope.

The FT-950 is a great little radio. Once you learn the menu system and get used to it, you'll be happy. It's easily setup to run digital modes, the audio reports are great, straight out of the box, the roofing filters are a big PLUS, etc., etc.

If it fits the budget, then go for it. I bought the voice recorder with mine and find it very helpful. I used it to call VP6DX on SSB and got them on every band and never spoke into the mic. Just pressed a button.

IT IS A PRETTY RADIO BUT INCOMPLETE EVEN WITH EVERY OPTION COULD HAVE GOTTEN
THE FT2000 FOR THE PRICE WITH EVERYTHING TOO BAD YEASU DOES NOT OFFER A
FINISHED PRODUCT SOME THING THAT EXPENSIVE YOU SHOULD ONLY HAVE TO PLUG IT
IN AND FLY MAKES AS MUCH SENSE AS FORD MAKEING THE STEERING WHEEL OR TIRES
AN OPTION THESE AMERICANS ARE SUCKERS LETS MAKE THE BRAKES AN OPTION AND
CHARGE THEM EXTRA LIKE THE AIRBAGS SHOULD BE DUH!

I agree with you Dick.The eHam.net reviews are worthless.Daniel,
pick up a copy of QST(3/2008)PAGES 46-51. Match the A.R.R.L.
lab report to the eHam.net reviews. You will get a professsional
review done with "REAL" test equipment.

I own the FT-950 and FT-2000D and have used both with the DMU-2000. The DMU
is well worth the current street price for use with the FT-950!

Here is just one example among the many nice features I enjoy on the DMU.
Critical filter tuning is a joy using the audio scope screen and near
impossible to duplicate without the DMU-2000 on either radio. I have owned
most Icom and Kenwood models (past and present). Using Icom, Kenwood, even
past Yaesu's, the only way to try to listen during adjacent interference
(SSB side splatter) was to tune 'around' it using IF shift, hi/lo cut etc.
Using the audio scope on the DMU-2000 (on the 950 or 2000) I can set the
contour filter to a wide (10-11), minus -20 to -40 value and watching the
offending splatter, suppress it using the contour knob until I can easily
listen 'through' it rather than trying to listen 'around' it as with other
radios. I'll often see splatter on one side of the audio spectrum and a
carrier will pop up on the other. Again watching the scope I quickly zap the
carrier with the manual notch, voila (Wah-la)... perfect copy!

As I have posted previously, using this tuning technique I have been able to
comfortably copy through QRM long after my friend with his ProIII has to
leave the air. I don't know if the Yaesu engineers designed the contour
filter for this purpose (although I notice that it goes further on the
negative side than on the positive) but they deserve credit for a unique
filter tool that puts the new Yaesu's in a class of their own! Once you get
use to using the contour filter this way, it becomes one of your favorite
features of the radio and hard to live without. Sort of like the Icom scope
feature... but now with the DMU we've got that option too, only with more
versatility ;)

Two more points to consider:
1 No, software doesn't come close to duplicating the DMU.
2 The DMU can easily be removed from the FT-950 and put in the FT-2000 if
you decide to upgrade later.

Marty,

I talked to one DMU owner who said the Band Scope did not update as
fast as the Icom 756PRO radios (it has a lag), is this correct?

Thanks,

The FT-950 is a great little radio. Once you learn the menu system

and get used to it, you'll be happy. It's easily setup to run
digital modes, the audio reports are great, straight out of the box,
the roofing filters are a big PLUS, etc., etc.

If it fits the budget, then go for it. I bought the voice recorder

Hi all,

i am thinking of getting the Yaesu FT-950 but i have had my doubts
with the radio reading the reviews. they say its built around the
FTDX-9000. but what is it compared to the FT-2000. my budget is

for

the FT-950 and i dont know if it is worth spending the money for

can some of the problems be fixed with software updates with the

Thanks in advance

Here is just one example among the many nice features I enjoy on

the DMU.

Critical filter tuning is a joy using the audio scope screen and

near

impossible to duplicate without the DMU-2000 on either radio. I

have owned

most Icom and Kenwood models (past and present). Using Icom,

Kenwood, even

past Yaesu's, the only way to try to listen during adjacent

interference

(SSB side splatter) was to tune 'around' it using IF shift, hi/lo

cut etc.

Using the audio scope on the DMU-2000 (on the 950 or 2000) I can

set the

contour filter to a wide (10-11), minus -20 to -40 value and

watching the

offending splatter, suppress it using the contour knob until I can

easily

listen 'through' it rather than trying to listen 'around' it as

with other

radios. I'll often see splatter on one side of the audio spectrum

and a

carrier will pop up on the other. Again watching the scope I

quickly zap the

carrier with the manual notch, voila (Wah-la)... perfect copy!

As I have posted previously, using this tuning technique I have

been able to

comfortably copy through QRM long after my friend with his ProIII

has to

leave the air. I don't know if the Yaesu engineers designed the

contour

filter for this purpose (although I notice that it goes further on

the

negative side than on the positive) but they deserve credit for a

unique

filter tool that puts the new Yaesu's in a class of their own!

Once you get

use to using the contour filter this way, it becomes one of your

favorite

features of the radio and hard to live without. Sort of like the

Icom scope

feature... but now with the DMU we've got that option too, only

with more

versatility ;)

Two more points to consider:
1 No, software doesn't come close to duplicating the DMU.
2 The DMU can easily be removed from the FT-950 and put in the FT-

2000 if

you decide to upgrade later.

I got hooked on the 'live' band scope long ago thanks to Icom. I more
recently owned a ProII for a while but didn't have it for an A/B test with
the DMU, however, I don't miss the Icom scope one bit. For all practical
purposes the DMU band scope is a 'live' scope, plenty fast and more
versatile plus it has the 'audioscope' screen which is instantaneous. OK,
I'm now looking at the 2000 and DMU bandscope, listening for CW and SSB @
various span widths. I can't get to a 1sec count between the audio and the
scope so we are talking split seconds here as far as any delay. I.E., if you
stop to take a close look and examine the bandscope, you can tell that there
is a slight lag but in practical everyday use it's just a 'live' scope. You
can eliminate any lag by the use of the LBWS function but I haven't seen the
need. Now that I don't have to be staring at the front of a radio to be
using the scope features, I'm kind of spoiled and don't want to go back to a
radio without an external monitor option. I think the ProIII might have that
option but haven't owned the III.

I have a 22" ViewSonic but I actually ended up using a small color backup
camera monitor (has VGA input) I purchased on eBay (another one is mounted
in my van for the camera). The screen measures a bit less than 8.5"
diagonally, beautiful sharp color display with the DMU. I can set it on the
radio or wherever, takes up little room. The brand on this one is "HAMI", no
kidding!

Joe,

Do any of the present transceivers on the market have a way/place to plug in an external monitor? I have never seen one, but that doesn't mean they don't have a socket for one.
