Why is the XWFE filter so expensive? ›

The product works great, but GE does not allow any other companies to manufacture this filter so they are able to control the very high cost. They include a chip inside and if you use a different brand, the water filter and ice maker quits working. Easy to install. Genuine GE replacement filter.

XWF and XWFE Compatibility

The XWFE filter is backwards compatible. It can be used in refrigerators that use an XWF filter. The XWF is not forward compatible with newer models of refrigerators using the XWFE because they are designed to have the filter interact with the control panel.

We recommend that refrigerators with water filtration systems only use genuine GE Appliances water filters.

The only difference between the XWFE and the XWF is a chip on the back of the XWFE filter, which the newer GE refrigerators "use radio frequency identification (RFID) to "talk" to the fridge. The chip is used to detect leaks and let the refrigerator know whether it's a genuine factory product or not.

Many refrigerators have built-in water filtration that filters sediment and contaminants from the water going to the dispenser and/or the icemaker. If you do not need or want to use the water filter, a bypass plug must be used in place of the filter.

Counterfeit filters don't contain enough - if any - of the filtering materials necessary to keep them out of your water. Beyond the risk to your water, counterfeit filters can do serious damage to your appliance.
